Spying, romance, death-defying escapes from evil pursuers: it's all in a day's work for Bianca St. Ives. In this third in the Guardian series (following The Moscow Deception, 2018), St. Ives, master of disguises, is on the run from killers while trying to plant disinformation in the hands of a hostile foreign power. Acting as her protector is the handsome, capable Colin Rogan, who may not be trustworthy. St. Ives finds this Bond-type partner irresistible, a subplot that sometimes gets corny. Overall, however, the tale comprises a long, exciting chase (leading to a gratifyingly suspenseful conclusion). Robards' fans will devour this latest in the series; try it, too, with patrons who enjoy Iris Johansen. Copyright 2019 Booklist Reviews.

When your existence is the result of a secret government genetic experiment and a CIA kill team is targeting you, you probably shouldn't refuse an offer of a job in exchange for calling the agency off. But Bianca St. Ives trusts no one, even if it's a spy-for-hire she desires who keeps turning up like a bad penny. Colin Rogan has two goals: get the beautiful ex-spy to work for his alphabet organization and make her trust him. He'd also like to get further than first base with her, but then she'd have to be unarmed and he knows that's not likely. Readers will enjoy a lightning-fast pace, amazing premise, and larger-than-life yet credible characters in Robards's third sophisticated whodunit spy novel (after The Moscow Deception ) with attitude. The conversational dialog accented with spy-speak provides a bird's-eye view of the goings-on of an enigmatic, loyal, and lethal protagonist and the banter between Bianca and her nemesis Colin is terrific. VERDICT Fans of Iris Johansen, Laura Griffin, and Lisa Jackson will enjoy this series, which should be read in order. [See Prepub Alert, 9/17/18.]—Debbie Haupt, St. Charles City–Cty. Lib. As part of an effort to eradicate all evidence of a clandestine government program, a ruthless CIA hit squad targets super thief Bianca St. Ives in bestseller Robards's stellar third Guardian thriller (after 2018's The Moscow Deception). Meanwhile, Bianca's current nemesis and one-time love interest, Colin Rogan, tells Bianca that he'll call off the hit squad if she'll pose as idealistic NSA contractor Lynette Holbrook, who has stolen sensitive government secrets, and plant these secrets, which have now been replaced with fake information, with the North Korean authorities. Bianca has good reason not to trust Colin, who doesn't control the CIA hit squad despite his claim that he does, but after they're nearly killed when their car is remotely hijacked, Bianca agrees to his terms. With Colin as her handler, Bianca embarks on a mission that takes her from Paris to North Korea, where's she kidnapped and taken to a squalid North Korean prison camp. Bianca must use her distinctive and extensive skill set, and learn to trust Colin, if they're going to get out of this one alive. Bianca and Colin's sizzling chemistry makes for a great match up, and the cinematic, relentless action is sprinkled with Robards's trademark humor. This is Bianca's most exciting and satisfying adventure yet. Agent: Robert Gottlieb, Trident Media. (Mar.)
